MUSIC EXECUTIVE TALKS DIGITAL (Part 2)

DYNAMYTERECORDS

Digi-Label Signs World-Wide Distribution Deal

DO I HAVE TO PAY FOR A MEMEBERSHIP?

Some companies out there with similar services as ours will charge you an arm-and-a•leg to get down with them. Up to $5,000 or more in some cases. It’s crazy! Distribution does not cost a fee. An administration fee of $35 for up to 3 – 4 songs is required for us to upload your files into the system for world-wide distribution.

CAN AN ARTIST RELEASE A MIXTAPE?

NO! Reason being is because of copy•right infringements. We can get our ass sued bigtime. So, you can call your album a Mixtape as long as you are not using other people’s beats that you don’t have ownership to.

WHAT ELSE SHOULD INDIE ARTISTS KNOW ABOUT TAKING CARE OF THEIR BUSINESS?

Stop and read! Read a book called This Business of Music by Krasilovsky / Shemel / Gross / Feinstein and The Craft and Business of Songwriting by Braheny. I think these books will help any artist that is trying to make a career in the music business. You want to understand something about contracts, licensing agree•ments and synchronization, which has to do with your songs becoming a part of a video game or film/movie.

WHAT MISTAKES ARE YOU SEEING ARTISTS MAKE?

You want to help a lot of these guys because you see the talent and potential that they have but some of them will not listen to good sound advice. I see guys buying chains, shoes and clothes but will not spend one dime on MARKETING. They would rather spend a thousand dollars with TV Johnny and expect you to shoot their music video for FREE! It’s like they’re doing things completely backwards. I was interviewing the Legendary Ton Loc about 3 years ago and he said, “Look at the artists who consider themselves completely as under•ground artists and tell me where they are in 5 years from now”. Ton Loc is still performing and earning monies from his record Wild Thang. I think regardless to what we think about Ton Loc, you gotta want to be around long enough to make your money from this business. An international-associate of mine in Australia was telling me that the people overseas want more of this H-Town Music. I mention that to say that we have to become universal in how we see ourselves. Not just local artists but Global. I will also say that you as an artist must continue to invest in yourself. I hear foolishness from some regarding an artist being too old to rap. Look at some of these Country singers, Rock singers and others still performing even though they have a little age on them.

WHAT ABOUT WORKING WITH MAJOR RECORDING ARTISTS?

My associates have access to major artists such as the Wu Tang Clan, MIMS and George Benson, providing consultation, contract negotiations and other stuff. I have access to other major artists as well and hope to be in a position to assist artists in making a  comeback into the music-business to continue doing what they love to do.

HOW CAN THIS SERVICE BEN•EFIT A MUSIC PRODUCER?

A music producer would be much easier to work with in some cases. They own the music. They make the music. So, I like connect•ing on with them, talking with them about the music business and how to make it better for them. I have tried building positive relationships with music producers from Houston because I feel they need to be out-front and not just “behind da scenes”. DJ DMD gave me almost 30 tracks to work with. I recieved about 20 from Mike B. and hope to be able to release some of their music soon.

DIGITAL DISTRIBUTION SERVICES

WHAT KIND OF MUSIC ARE YOU’LL LOOKING TO SIGN?

Well I’m a big fan of “gangsta rap” or atleast as a teenager, I listened to a lot of it. From Ice Cube to Scarface, I have ben influ•enced by these very creative artists, including their producers. So, I want all the really good rap records I can find because these are the new leaders of tomorrow and indeed many of them have a lot to say about what is going onaround the world. But I also like the urban pop records like Dream’s “Love vs. Money” album. What he did on that project was fasci•nating to me. The whole album was just put together really nice. We are really Universal with what we do at DynamyteRecords. We are open to Latin, Top 40, Gospel, and even Comedy albums.
