Close Enough to Greatness

25 years ago today, before Luciano Vega was a name tied to media, music, and storytelling, I was just a young man chasing proximity to purpose.

I was cast in the ABC television movie Muhammad Ali: King of the World (2000), a biopic that told the early story of Muhammad Ali when he was still Cassius Clay—from his Olympic rise to becoming heavyweight champion of the world.

The film starred Terrence Howard, who portrayed a young Cassius Clay long before Hustle & Flow, Crash, Iron Man, and Empire. Watching him up close, before the world fully knew his name, was powerful. You could feel the hunger, the focus, the destiny in the room.

As for me — they only caught the back of my head on camera.

And believe it or not, that was more than enough.

Because it confirmed something early:
I was supposed to be in these spaces.
Around stories that matter.
Around history, culture, and Black excellence.

Every chapter doesn’t come with applause. Some just come with alignment.
